A bit of history

Call and Response was born in partnership between local educators, Hannah Caterino and Jamilah Vogel, and Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater.   It has grown into a distinct organization that collaborates with local agencies, professors, and educators from VT schools to build a network of educators committed to social justice education, interrupting systemic racism, and engaging in difficult conversations.

From 2004-2007 Call and Response workshops were offered through local West African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Jeh Kulu.  Each of four annual events included presentation and discussion, hands on workshops and a dance and drum experiential workshops.

Over the next nine years organizers Hannah and Jamilah pursued other ventures, traveled, relocated, and sought education on cultural competency, race and racism, and effective advocacy.

Our unique logo was created by Amber Vogel in the year 2000 when she was five years old. This mold of her hand was created as a gift for her mother, Jamilah.  Amber has always felt that the world is more beautiful in full color.
